Karma Teens (gr. 7-12)
In Yoga, Karma means “action.” It refers to the work that we do, the services we perform and the attitude with which we do it. Teenagers are immersed in the action of self-creation. For the first time, they imagine the possibility of themselves separate from their families. It’s a time to reach and grow; it’s a time of exciting possibilities; and it can be a time of great fear.
Yoga offers teenagers an opportunity to safely explore who they are and the roles they might play in the world. Incorporating discussion, Yoga poses (or asanas), relaxation and meditation, Karma Teens provides an opportunity for open conversation and quiet introspection. It leads teens through an inner journey as they discover the essence of themselves, and provides the self-assuredness and confidence they need as the venture out into the world.
Each 8-week session focuses on a thematic idea to help teens broaden their understanding of themselves an the global community in which they live. Theme completion is recognized with unique collector's pins that teens can affix to their jacket, backpack or their ChildLight Yoga mat bag (included in the one-time registration fee). The fashionable thematic pin will help remind them of what they've learned and serve as a fun conversation starter with friends.
To help teens develop a better understanding of yoga "off the mat," classes also work toward an end of the year service project. "ChildLight Yoga in Action" is designed to help young adults understand their connection to their community and to support them as they recognize and offer their gifts in service to others.
All of our sessions are appropriate for teens who are new to Yoga, as well as for those who are continuing their instruction.
